How we score brokers

Every broker on this page is regulated by the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) and covered by the Canadian Investor Protection Fund. Ratings weigh five factors:

  • Trading costs — spreads, commissions, swaps
  • Platforms — MT4/MT5, proprietary tools, mobile
  • Funding — CAD deposits, withdrawal speed
  • Market range — pairs and other instruments
  • Service — support quality and education

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers on regulation, leverage, funding and safety for Canadian forex traders.

Is forex trading legal in Canada?

Yes. Retail forex and CFD trading is legal across Canada. Brokers serving Canadian residents must be regulated by CIRO (the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization) and clients are protected by the Canadian Investor Protection Fund up to prescribed limits if a member firm becomes insolvent.

What leverage can Canadian traders use?

Leverage in Canada is set per currency pair based on margin requirements published by CIRO. Major pairs typically allow around 30:1 to 50:1, with lower leverage on volatile or exotic pairs. Brokers may apply stricter limits than the regulatory minimum.

Do Canadian forex brokers offer bonuses?

No. Canadian regulations prohibit account-opening inducements such as deposit bonuses for leveraged products. Any offshore broker advertising deposit bonuses to Canadians is operating outside the Canadian regulatory framework — we do not list such brokers.

Can I fund a forex account with Interac?

Several CIRO-regulated brokers accept Interac e-Transfer or Interac Online alongside bank wire, EFT and card deposits. See our funding methods guide for a broker-by-broker breakdown.

Is my money safe with a CIRO-regulated broker?

Client funds at CIRO member firms are held to strict capital and segregation standards, and CIPF coverage protects client property within limits if the dealer fails. This is the single biggest reason to avoid unregulated offshore brokers.

Which forex broker is best in Canada?

It depends on your profile: OANDA rates best overall with no minimum deposit, FOREX.com is the top MetaTrader (MT4/MT5) broker, CMC Markets has the lowest spreads and widest pair range, Interactive Brokers is best for professionals and day trading, and Friedberg Direct (AvaTrade) is strongest for beginners and copy trading. All five are CIRO-regulated.

What is the difference between CIRO and IIROC?

They are the same framework: IIROC merged with the MFDA to form CIRO, the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization. A broker described as IIROC-regulated is today regulated by CIRO — the protections (segregated funds, capital rules, CIPF coverage) carry over.

Can I start forex trading with $100 in Canada?

Yes. OANDA, Interactive Brokers and CMC Markets have no minimum deposit, so you can start with C$100 or less using micro lots. Sensible position sizing at 1% risk per trade is workable from roughly a few hundred dollars.

How do I choose between MT4, MT5 and proprietary platforms?

MT4 remains the standard for Expert Advisors and simple charting; MT5 adds more timeframes, depth of market and a faster backtester; proprietary platforms often have better charting and news integration. Our platform guide compares all three approaches.
